The Tower

The Urban renewal attempts to revitalise and rejuvenate Kg Tiong that have since fallen to disrepair and threatens the viability of the community. The renewal would need to reintroduce economic and residential community as they are mutually supportive of each other. The economic activity is proposed through the development of retail, commercial, and office components whilst the would provide the community base.

Kampung Tiong and its neighbour Kampung Cina were two of the earliest settlements in Kuala Terengganu where Kg Cina is under UNESCO’s world monument programme. With the cultural history of Kg Cina, the shoplots that border Kg Cina are treated with expressions of Chinese heritage.  Chinese inspired screens adorn the facade as a reaction to our tropical climate. Contemporarised version of the Chinese moon gate subtly acts as the ‘hai phang’ or traditional gateway to the commercial area.

The art of Songket is believed to have been brought first to Terengganu and Kelantan in the 1500s. The art has flourished in Terengganu and stimulated the art of songket in other states in the peninsular. The position of songket in Terengganu’s culture is recognised and is utilised as the screen facade of the lots.

Kuala Terengganu with plentiful supply of chengal wood was a  center of traditional shipbuilding that supplied ships as far as to Johor sailors. It was also a center of in spices and gold. The maritime history is reflected in the towers where its profile matches that of sailing ships.  The form of the office tower takes its cue from Terengganu’s Batu Bersurat, a legacy that is a testament to Kuala Terengganu as a center of political and economic power.
